Original Medicare Part A and Part B doesn’t cover burial or funeral expenses. If you were enrolled in an MSA plan, funeral expenses can’t be paid for using funds from a Medical Savings Account plan. Funeral expenses are also not covered by Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plans.

If your family member or loved one was a Medicare beneficiary, you’ll need to report the death to Medicare. You can do so by contacting Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, from 7 AM to 7 PM. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. If they had benefits through the Railroad Retirement Board, contact them to report the death at 1-877-772-5772, Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 3:30 PM. TTY users can call 1-312-751-4701.
