Cary attended U of Jamestown, South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota. He has spent most of his time in the Dakotas and Minnesota.

Cary has been married to his wife Karen for 42 years and they have 3 wonderful daughters and nine grandchildren. He enjoys family activities, triathlons and sports officiating.
